'Far from Men' (Loin des Hommes), adapted from Albert Camus’s short story 'The Guest', is set over the course of a few days in 1954 in Algeria. It tells the story of two men: Daru, a reclusive school-teacher who teaches French to the children of shepherds; and Mohamed, a villager accused of murder. Daru is forced to escort Mohamed to face justice in Tinguit, a nearby town. Reluctantly, Daru leads the way across the desolate and beautiful Atlas Mountains. Over the course of their journey, which is set at the beginning of the anti-imperial struggle against the French, Mohamed and Daru become friends.
The still-frame is taken when, after a long journey, the two reach a fork in the road. One path leads to Tinguit where Mohamed is to face prosecution for his crime. He sees his execution by the state as the only way to stop a cycle of violence that has shaken his family. Daru attempts to persuade Mohamed not to go to the city, not to surrender. He offers to cover for Mohamed while advising him to take the other path into the desert where he could join the nomads and keep living. Daru offers his friend a prayer and leaves Mohamed standing at the fork. The still-frame is taken as Mohamed looks towards Tanguit, with Daru’s figure receding into the background. He takes the path into the desert, much to Daru’s relief.
