Person depicted: Toni Morrison
Born in Ohio, USA, in 1931, Toni Morrison is an important African-American novelist. Her writings have been met with much acclaim, receiving awards such the Nobel Prize for Literature, the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award. The Nobel panel said that Morrison’s novels are ‘characterized by visionary force and poetic import, [which] gives life to an essential aspect of American reality’. Her best-known novels include The Bluest Eye, Song of Solomon and Beloved, with the latter being adapted into a film starting Oprah Winfrey and Danny Glover.
This photograph depicts Morrison looking to the right of the observer. She is light by a fairly bright overhead light, which extenuates the shadows on her cheek and jaw. This photo has an emotional tension in it between the upper and lower parts of Morrison’s face. There seems to be a softness in the expression of her eyes, which contrasts with her lips, which are firmly closed with their corner downturned.
