Person depicted: A carnival attendee in Düsseldorf
This photograph was taken in Düsseldorf where their carnival is launched with a local ritual. A roguish fictional character called the Hoppeditz is awakened. The Hoppenditz is seen as something of an embodiment of the carnival season. This photograph, taken during the awakening ceremony, shows a woman laughing into the camera. She is in full carnival fashion. Her face, painted with brightly spotted paint, looks out from a vibrant colourful fluffy costume. From under extra-long rainbow eyelashes, her laughing blue eyes meet the camera.
Carnival is an important festive season in many part of the world, typically involving an overturning of the normal pattern of life, a reversal of roles, and an inversion of general norms. This often involves public celebrations, street parties, and parades with costumes, masks, and alcohol. Drawing on ancient roots, the first modern carnivals in Germany began in the nineteenth century. In the German-speaking world, Carnival kicks off on the 11th day of the 11th month at at 11:11 am. This alignment of abstract numbers resonates with the beginning of Christian Advent season, and St. Martin’s Day, the Christianized term for pagan harvest-day celebrations. Carnival is now a large-scale celebration, with the season generating annual revenues of almost 2 billion euros in Germany alone.
