Person depicted: Celia Johnson as the character Laura
This image comes from a simple yet emotionally complex film that depicts a doomed romance of a married woman, Laura, who falls in love with a stranger in a railway station tea-room. The stranger is a doctor named Alec. Laura is both uncomfortable and elated, desirous and guilty, at the emerging relationship. Both Laura and Alec are soon overshadowed by the impossibility of their situation. They decide to end it, and plan to meet once more for a final rendezvous at the station. During their final goodbyes, Laura accidentally meets an annoying acquaintance who proceeds to barge into their conversation. Any proper goodbye is ruined by a torrent of inane babble. Alec departs, stealing only a fleeting touch on Laura’s shoulder as he leaves to depart for South Africa. The still-frame is captured at this emotionally poignant moment.
