Person depicted: The Joker as portrayed by Heath Ledger

This image is of The Joker as depicted in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. The Joker is Batman’s antagonist and antithesis, a criminal from Gotham City. Heath Ledger portrays him as a serious lunatic in an Academy Award winning performance. In this scene, The Joker attempts to make a deal with a group of Gotham’s mob leaders in which he offers to kill the Batman in exchange for half of their money. One mob leader cannot abide The Joker’s unhinged attitude and threatens to have him killed instead. To this, The Joker reveals half-a-dozen hand-grenades with purple strings attached to their pins, tied inside his jacket. This still-frame captures the moment when The Joker offers the mobsters his ‘card’—a joker from a deck of playing cards—for when they feel like ‘taking things a little more seriously’.

Heath Ledger, the actor depicted in this image, died in January 2008 from accidental prescription-drug overdose, six months before The Dark Knight was released and while it was still being edited. He was 28-years-old. Ledger received numerous posthumous accolades for his performance in film, and deep emotional responses from fellow actors.
