Person depicted: A Russian honour guard

On 26 June 2009, Admiral Mike Mullen from the US Navy, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, visited Russia. As part of his three-day trip, the Admiral attended a wreath-laying ceremony at Moscow's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. He was welcomed by Russian military honour guard, drawn from the 154th Commandant’s Regiment.

This image is cropped from a larger photograph that depicts a long line of uniformed soldiers. The man in our image is the only soldier in focus, and he turns towards the camera, looking to the right of the official US Navy photographer who was snapping his picture. In a style befitting the modern military, the honour guard is young, formal and clean-cut. His posture is highly disciplined, and his chin is raised, enabling him to look coolly down and appraise at the visiting American military delegation.
