This image depicts a young woman wearing Mickey Mouse ears and leaning heavily on a metal rail outside of the main entrance to a theme park called Dismaland. Her fist presses into her cheek. It was reported that the stewards, like the person depicted in the photo, would only say ‘Welcome to Dismaland’ and ‘Enjoy’, ‘competing with each other in levels of insincerity’.

In 2015, the British graffiti-artist Banksy created the ‘bemusement park’ in a derelict seafront lido in Western-Super-Mare near his hometown of Bristol. This satirical anti-theme park, which opened for a short period in August-September, featured his art and the work of 60 other artists. Dismaland’s website describes the park as a ‘festival of art, amusements and entry-level anarchism’. It was proposed as an ‘alternative to the sugar-coated tedium of the average family day out’.
