This image comes from the Portrait of a Lady (The Dancer) painted by George Lambert in 1911. The painting depicts a woman gazing off into the left with dark unfocused eyes. The black background contrasts strikingly with her white skin, accentuated by the red of the roses in her dark hair, matching the red of her lipstick and her ear-rings. There is a weariness in her face, and the very intimacy of the painting reveals a distance in her expression.

Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, George Washington Lambert (1873–1930) migrated with his family to Australia in 1887 at age 14. He began by drawing ink cartoons before becoming a full-time artist in 1896. During the Great War, Lambert became an official war artist, and travelled to Gallipoli in Turkey to portray the invasion attempt. From his time there, Lambert created an artwork that is now the largest painting at the Australia War Memorial collection. After the War, Lambert returned to portraiture, winning the Archibald Prize, Australia's most prestigious portrait award, in 1927.
