Person depicted: A Muslim boy from Strasbourg, France

This photograph was taken during the midday prayers of the first day of Ramadan. It depicts a young child doubled over with his head on the ground behind a group of adults bowed in prayer. The boy seems to be playfully imitating the people before him, and the photograph captures a moment when he looks directly at the camera.

The photograph was taken in the Strasbourg Grand Mosque, France, a large structure with a capacity of 1,200 people. Mainly Muslims of North Africa, mainly of Moroccan origin worship in the Mosque, which was built on the banks of the Ill River and inaugurated in September 2012. In the following year, when the photograph was taken, the Grand Mosque of Paris had fixed the first day of Ramadan as Wednesday, breaking away from the French Council of Muslim Religion that had otherwise declared Tuesday as the first day. This photograph was taken on Tuesday.

The photograph has been reproduced many times since, including for an article entitled ‘After Paris Attacks, French Muslim Council Calls On France's 2,500 Mosques To “Unambiguously” Denounce Terror’, published in the International Business Times.
