Creator of the image: Unknown Date of the image creation: c. 1129–1136 Medium of the image: A moulded and glazed ceramic tile Person depicted: Unknown This ceramic tile is held in the al Sabah Collection in Dar al Athar al Islamiyyah at the Amricani Cultural Centre, Kuwait City. The collection notes describe it as a ‘large tile with representation of the head of a youth depicted in three-quarter view, with sullen expression, wearing a large yellow and blue-striped turban revealing dangling strands of hair. The tile is 23.7 cm high and 23.8 cm wide. The background is depicted with a blue branch bearing coloured leaves and pink flowers, which attributes it to the Safavid dynasty.’ The Safavids ruled from 1501 to 1722, experiencing a brief restoration from 1729 to 1736. This suggests a production date in this period. The dynasty is sometimes described as marking the beginning of modern Persian history.
