Born in Switzerland in 1940, Jocelyn Wildenstein is an extremely wealthy New York based ‘socialite’ — code for a privileged person who spends their time engaging in exclusive social gatherings. While on a hunting safari at an elite neo-colonial outpost in Kenya, Jocelyn was introduced to the French multibillionaire Alec Wildenstein by Saudi arms dealer and business magnet Adnan Khashoggi, then among the world’s richest people. Jocelyn and Alec married in 1978, and had two children. Thereafter, between 1997 and 1999, the couple went through a high-profile divorce, much to the joy of the scandal-seeking sensationalist celebrity commercial media.

Most notably, or notoriously, Wildenstein is best known for having undergone extensive plastic surgery. Allegedly, she has spent million on surgery, having had multiple rounds of cheek implants, lip augmentations, eyelid surgeries, Botox injections, and facelifts, with the apparent purpose of making her look ‘more cat-like’. This photograph was taken at the celebrity party for fashion-designer Lloyd Klein’s opening of his Los Angeles flagship retail store in 2006. The then 66-year-old Wildenstein took to the red carpet, striking a few poses for the collection of fashion photographers. The extensive reconstruction of her face makes her expression decidedly difficult to interpret. The skin around her eyes and lips has been so manipulated as that it seems largely irresponsive to the minute movements that make subtle emotional expressions possible.
