Lila Diane Sawyer (1942– ) is an American television journalist who spent 46 years working in the industry. After a stint as a White House press aid, Sawyer became a literary assistant to President Nixon. Thereafter, she reported for CBS, before becoming an anchor for various news-media shows, including 60 Minutes, Good Morning America, and Primetime Live. In 1997 she was formally inducted into the Television Hall of Fame, and has frequently been labelled by a ‘most powerful woman’ lists by organizations such as Forbes.
This photograph was taken of Sawyer on her first day as the anchor for the American Broadcasting Company’s flagship programme ABC World News. Beneath the studio lights and a layer of stage make-up, Sawyer appears to be highly confident, even self-satisfied, as she looks into the camera preparing to take on this prestigious position of mainstream American journalism. However, other emotions are revealed by her face as this contextualization is taken away.
Diane Sawyer was replaced as Anchor of ABC World News a few years later in 2014 by David Muir.
