The photo depicts Sima wearing a nun’s habit and grasping an AK47. According to the United Nations webpage, this image depicts a ‘106-year-old woman’ who ‘sits in front of her home guarding it with a rifle, in Degh village, near the city of Goris in southern Armenia. Armed conflicts took place in and around nearby Nagarno-Karabakh, a territory in Azerbaijan also claimed by Armenia’ (unmultimedia.org/photo). One year earlier, Armineh Johannes took a photo of Sima in Degh village, wearing similar clothes but holding a ball of twine. The photograph appeared in an exhibition curated by Gina Hablanian at the Armenian Library and Museum of America’s Terjenian Gallery.
Across the period 1988 to 1994, conflict called the Nagorno-Karabakh War occurred between Azerbaijan and the ethnic Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan. Armenians called the conflict the Artsakh Liberation War. An estimated 20,000 to 30,000 people were killed, while hundreds of thousands of people were displaced. This image has been used on many websites to illustrate articles and blog entries about the war. The photo depicts Sima wearing a nun’s habit and grasping an AK47.
