This sculpture was carved in the Gandharan region sometime in the period of the 4th to 6th centuries. Gandhara is the ancient name for the kingdom of Peshawar, crossing the Swat Valley and Potohar regions of Pakistan and the Jalabad region of Afghanistan. The sculpture has stucco with traces of pigment attached to it. Mary Harrsch photographed the image in 2009 at the Art Institute of Chicago. A bodhisattva In Mahayana Buddhism is the Sanskrit term for a person motivated by great compassion, and wishes to attain buddhahood.
