Person depicted: Oddusuddan student
This young woman stands with her friend in the yard of Oddusuddan School near Mullaitivu, Sri Lanka. They greet a delegation from Global Reconciliation, an Australian-based NGO that was visiting the once-militarized zone two years after the end of the war. Both girls have their hair in plats tied with blue ribbons. Both girls wear the uniforms of their school. In an earlier period they wore the uniforms of a war, a war that began before they were born. From 1983, and for the next 25 years, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Singhalese-dominated state of Sri Lanka had fought for control of the northern part of Sri Lanka. More than 100,000 people are estimated to have died, and everybody in the north, including the region of Mullaitivu were drawn into the conflict in some form or other.
